Alex Easton MLA has been left annoyed as a fire was deliberately started at waste land behind Balloo Industrial Estate and Bloomfield, forcing the fire service to attend to bring under control.

Speaking today Alex Easton MLA said:

“My heart goes out to our local fire fighters who are having to go out there, on a regular bases and deal with these sort of incidents over the summer; it is both unfair and is putting their lives on the line during ever call out.”

“I find it difficult to understand the mentality of someone wanting to start a fire deliberately it is an offense to do so and if caught those responsible will be in serious trouble with the police and the courts. These actions could potentially destroy people’s lives, health and property not to mention the cost of calling out the fire service on such a regular basis. My simple message to those involved think about what you’re doing, stop it before you ruin your life and the lives of other. I think it is maybe time for a review of sentencing on this issue and for tougher penalties for those involved in starting fires deliberately, there also needs to be better education on the issue at our schools and there needs a recognition of the fire service.”
