Alex Easton MLA was shocked to hear that there has been only one prosecution for incidents of river pollution over the last four years, despite dozens of incidents across rivers across North Down.

Speaking today Alex Easton MLA said:

“I am deeply shocked to find that there has been only one prosecution for incidents of river pollution in the last four years across North Down despite there being dozens of incidents of pollution incidents being recorded and reported across North Down. This is truly shocking and one wonders what are the Council, Rivers Agency and NIEA all doing to combat this huge problem. This is totally unacceptable that our government Agency’s appear to be doing very little to tackle this huge and important issue, and holding those responsible to account. At a time in our history when we should be cleaning up our rivers for our own public health and making them better for out wildlife, government agencies are failing in their duty to hold those responsible for polluting our rivers to account. I will be raising this directly with the DEARA Minister as this is just not acceptable.”
