I have been reflecting on the events of recent weeks of tensions in our communities, of expressions of frustration and anger, and how comments by myself and other politicians were reported.

Speaking today Alex Easton MP said:

I am very aware of the responsibility placed in me in my role as MP, and so one week on, I wanted to put forward some clearer thoughts on my vision for North Down. Which is based on my drive to work hard to improve the lives of my constituents across this borough, with constituents of every class, color and religion. I have said before but I will repeat it today, that there is no place for violence or intimidation in our society. I am committed to making sure our society is a safe place for people to live, and to prosper and will engage with other politicians. But I understand that people feel frustrated, as they see so many changes happening to the society around them, and people can be fearful of change. That is why I want to make a clear statement, to you now that I will be spending time over the coming months engaging with a range of organizations and community leaders to draw together a strategy for helping our communities to feel safer and happier. I support the right to peaceful, democratic and lawful protest but when problems occur, to ensure any antisocial elements are dealt with quickly and efficiently by the PSNI. It is my vision to help build a society where people feel empowered and safe enough to be welcoming, where no one feels left behind, or cut off from their familiar way of life. You know I have always worked hard to respond to my constituents concerns and this is my commitment to you, to continue to work with the best interests of our borough at heart. I look forward to engaging with many more of you going forward. Please contact me at 02891889620 and help me to work with you towards this goal of a safer, happier place to live for all.
