Alex Easton MLA has welcomed news from an NI Assembly written question that the Newtownards Minor Injury Unit is to be moved to another area of the Newtownards Hospital site.

Speaking today Alex Easton MLA said.

“I am pleased to hear that the Newtownards Minor Injury unit is to move to another rare of the Newtownards hospital site. The current Minot Injury unit is just not fit for purpose and is literally falling apart. It was not fair for staff to work in a building which is just falling apart and is not suitable for staff and patients who deserve better. A new location within the hospital which is more suitable and serves the community is the best solution for staff and the many residents from across Ards and North Down who currently use the site.

Ends:

The South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust (SEHSCT) plans to eventually move the Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) from its current location to another facility on the Ards Hospital site and demolish the building that the MIU is currently based in. These plans – and the related timetable – are subject to funding and the impacts of the ongoing COVID-19 response. In the short term SEHSCT will continue to maintain the building and keep it safe.
