Alex Easton MLA and his colleague Councillor Wesley Irvine visited areas affected by high tides in Groomsport and Donaghadee.
Speaking today Alex Easton MLA said:
“I was quite shocked by the amount of sea water in Donaghadee were the play park at the harbour area has been completed covered by the sea and was threatening to breach the wall defences and spill out onto the road. I was particularly concerned that neither Ards Council nor the Road Service had fitted any sand bags to prevent the sea coming out of the play park area on to The Parade.”
“I contacted both Ards Council and DRD who said they would monitor the situation and that the high tide was half way through its cycle and that the wind had dropped. I feel that lessons need to be learned at that Donaghadee is prepared for such dangerous events, and I feel we were lucky that the wind dropped at that time.”
“I also visited Groomsport and would congratulate North Down Borough Council who sent men and resources down with sand bags to protect properties, and to help clean up and deserve out thanks for their efforts”.
