Alex Easton MLA was delighted to hear that progress has been made towards works to improve Groomsport War Memorial after a Council site meeting held on the 28th February 2014.
Speaking today Alex Easton MLA said:
“It was good to see from the minuets of the site meeting held at the Groomsport War memorial that a consensus appears to have been agreed by Council, the Groomsport Remembrance Day Committee and the Groomsport Village Association on a way forward. It was agreed at the meeting to increase the standing area at both sides with a grass finish, widen the path and improve the walled entrance area. All of this work will be done from of the Councils maintenance budget. All this work will be completed by November 2014.”
“Any further work to the actual War Memorial itself has seen a funding application being made for restoration work to be done but is waiting for this application to be processed and will come back to the Council for further discussion between all parties involved. One decision that appears to have been agreed is that there will be no railings but Council could look at a floral display or small hedging around the War Memorial. I sincerely hope this cooperation will continue and that we can continue to progress this project to the memory of our War Dead and the betterment of Groomsport.”
