Alex Easton MLA has today called on Ards and North Down Council to lead the way to organize the celebrations for the 100 year Anniversary of Northern Ireland.

Speaking today Alex Easton MLA said:

“We are now approaching the date in which Northern Ireland was created as a legal entity on the 3rd May 1921 under the Government of Ireland Act 1921 and it is important that the local Council and the local community come together to look at creating celebrations for 100 years since the formation of Northern Ireland and that we include everyone in those celebrations”

I am calling on the Council to set up a small working group to include Councillors, Community Groups, British Legion, churches, youth groups, schools, businesses and the Orange Order to look at a serious of programmes and events that can best illustrate and celebration the positives of 100 years of Northern Ireland, were people of all faiths, religions and creeds can come together to celebrate this magnificent milestone in our history in a family orientated series of events.

There are many things the Council can lead on including the decoration of the town, public events parades, funding for street parties, history projects inviting Royalty to visit and much more. I want to see as much effort as humanly possible to sell Northern Ireland and its rich historical past but to also sell our future as we look forward to Northern Ireland celebrating in another 100 year’s time in what would be 200 years on the formation of Northern Ireland within the Unite kingdom.
