Alex Easton MLA has today called for more Social housing to be built as figures show a rise of 200 from 2020 to 2021 and with only 30 new social houses being built for next year.

Speaking today Alex Easton MLA said:

“I am deeply concerned to see that from figures released under a NI Assembly question show that the number of homelessness presenters to the Housing Executive for the North Down & Ards area for 2021 stands at an incredible 1937 people this is up by around 200 people form 2020, with 1341 in acute Housing stress. This is a startling and worrying figure that we have for the North Down area and the Community’s Minister is failing to tackle the issue.”

“It is quite clear that we do not have enough social housing in place to deal with the amount of people that are currently registered as homeless, and the only sure way to tackle this issue is to build more social housing through Housing Associations. There needs to be concerted plans put in place plans to build new social housing across North Down and to also look at bringing derelict housing back into stock as it is quite clear there are just not enough homes being built”.
