Alex Easton MLA has today called for community dialogue over the announcement by the Justice Minister that the Lisnevin prison Service is to be sold sooner rather than later.

Speaking to day Alex Easton MLA said:

“While I have no objection to the Justice Department disposing of surplus sites, I believe that the Lisnevin site in Millsile is far too important to just be sold to just anyone. I would ask the Justice Minister to at the very least to consider consulting with the residents of Millisle on any proposals so that there will be community buy in to any new proposals for the site.”

“I would also call for the Minister to ensure that the Garden of Remembrance is either maintained in any such proposals or moved to another suitable location with the agreement of former and present prison officers. I would also ask that the current prison museum is also preserved as it is an important part of our history. I will be posing a series of written questions to the Justice Minister on the issue at the NI Assembly.”
